Look At You Did to Me Part 2
I slowly turned to look behind me, counting to ten in my head so I could control my reaction. The man i had loved for a lifetime stood in front of me. I wanted to see the mask behind his innocent looking brown eyes. The eyes that I thought treasured me, but instead hid a man i never truly knew. Those eyes that were looking me up and down. Chocolate colored pools that seemed concerned with my health and well-being. Those orbs were now making my skin crawl, wising I could wash away every time this man had ever glanced in my direction. Yet, I gathered my strength, calmed my nerves, and looked directly at him.
"Why are you here?" My voice sounded much calmer than I felt. "You said you couldn't make it because of an interview. "
"Yeah, well the interview was on this floor, so I figured I'd see how the baby is doing along with you." He tried to make it sound as if he were concerned but something in his pitch was off.
Another doctor walked to and stood next to mine. "James, I'll call you later so we can set up a dinner date." She made her presence known, although she could see my husband and I were having a discussion.
"Okay," James answered her. I cleared my throat.
"This is my wife, Dia. We're having a baby, so i wanted to check on her." James smiled at the female doctor, while my doctor looked uncomfortable.
The woman reached out to shake my hand. I looked at her as if she was contaminated. "It's nice to finally meet the woman James cried over in college." She laughed as if I was supposed to find her statement funny. Now James was looking uncomfortable. I chose violence, and wanted to make it worse.
"The doctor was just giving me an update from my tests. " My smile was anything but nice. "I tested positive for HIV."
